It is not very often that a really good cop show comes along. Southland is one of those rare shows, in fact I would go as far to say it is great, and I don’t use that adjective lightly. Most police dramas find at least one way to irritate me (and I probably speak for most cops here) in every episode – so I don’t watch many for very long.
Southland was different, it felt real to me. The calls felt real, the characters felt real and no subject was off limits. It was just gritty enough to feel authentic, but never felt gratuitously violent or profane. It is what the movie “End of Watch” aspired to, but fell short of.
Unfortunately, Southland has been canceled after its 5th season. I am going to miss the show and especially John Cooper, a complicated character and a good cop.
